Shortly before 10 p.m. on Saturday night, first responders from multiple agencies in and around Talbot County were called to the 24500 block of Post Road in St. Michaels, where a two-alarm fire broke out and ripped through a two-story home and garage.
It took approximately 80 firefighters from the St. Michaels Volunteer Fire Department and other nearby agencies more than two hours to get the flames under control as they contended with the conditions caused by Tropical Storm Ophelia, which complicated their efforts.
"This fire occurred as the remnants of Tropical Storm Ophelia was making its way through the area, bringing heavy winds and rain, severely hampering control efforts and exacerbating conditions," fire officials said.
It caused an estimated $3 million in damage. One firefighter was treated for a medical emergency, according to the department.
According to the Office of the State Fire Marshal, the home was unoccupied at the time the fire broke out, and it was discovered and reported by a neighbor. It was reportedly under construction.
The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation.
